Fireside Chat: History Professor William Hitchcock

Monday, September 10, 2018 - 19:30
New Cabell Hall 389

Fireside chats are small, hour-long discussions between professors and scholars designed to foster intellectual dialogues and communicate more closely with professors directly. It is a great way to meet new professors and engage with topics that you wouldn't normally be learning in a classroom environment.

The first fireside chat of the year, which will be given by William Hitchcock, a history professor at UVA who resigned from the Miller Center upon the hiring of Marc Short:

Monday, September 10th at 7pm in NCH 389

“Tolerance in the Age of Trump: Reflections on the Marc Short Controversy”

With History Professor William Hitchcock

“Universities are places where academic inquiry should be free and unfettered. As scholars and students, we embrace free speech and we’re willing to debate ideas, even repugnant ones. But how far should that tolerance extend? Should we embrace as colleagues people whose politics and ethics are deeply compromised? If so, why? And at what cost?”

As always, there will food provided!
