Research Grants
The Echols Program provides financial support for independent research and scholarship through a number of means. The Ingrassia Family Echols Scholars Research Fund was established in January 2009 by an Endowment Gift from Timothy J. Ingrassia. The Fund provides financial support to Echols Scholars conducting a research project under the supervision of a faculty member that requires personal expenditures (stipend support), travel, and/or research supplies costs. This research should be carried out in conjunction with a faculty-approved and graded course, seminar, independent study, or as part of a monitored thesis in a Distinguished Major Program. Interested Scholars will need to submit a completed application packet to the Echols Program Office. Grants are provided to Scholars on a competitive basis and due to budget constraints, the Program cannot support more than a handful of these annually. We hope to expand our potential to support more students in upcoming years. Awards vary in amount up to $2000.
Echols Scholars should also investigate various Scholarships offered by the University and College of Arts and Sciences on the website of the Office of Undergraduate Research.
Operational Endowed Scholarships
The Echols Scholars Program appreciates the kind generosity of individuals who have helped to create the following endowed scholarships for the Echols Program.
The Sheri Gayle Richman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a fourth-year Echols Scholar in the humanities or social sciences (not the natural or physical sciences) and intending to enter a program of graduate or professional study the semester after graduation. The Scholarship is for approximately $4,000, is awarded in the spring and deadlines will be posted in the spring semester. The Scholarship was established for Echols Scholars by the family and friends of Sheri Gayle Richman, an Echols Scholar who died in an automobile accident on June 7, 1988.
The Laurie Lee Woolen Memorial Scholarship is awarded to two rising second year Echols Scholars. The Scholarship, each of approximately $3000.00, was established for Echols Scholars by the friends and family of Laurie Lee Woolen, who died in an automobile accident in July of 1982, after completing her second year at the University.
The Kenneth N. and Barbara B. Adatto Scholarship is awarded annually to an Echols Scholar of any year or major from the state of Louisiana. The criteria include the quality, inventiveness, and integrity of the student's academic program and intellectual life, as well as his or her contribution to the academic community of the University.
Applications for the above scholarships are emailed out to eligible Scholars several weeks prior to the deadlines.
Regrettably, the Echols Scholars Program cannot offer scholarships or financial assistance to incoming Echols Scholars.
